Electromyogram (EMG) Test In Wyandotte, MI

Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic test used to measure how well the muscles of your body respond to the electrical signals being emitted to motor nerves or specialized nerve cells. This test aids in the diagnosis of neuromuscular abnormalities in the human body.

EMG is used to diagnose a wide variety of conditions and diseases by recording the electrical activity of your muscles when they are active. This is done by producing a current. The current is generally proportional to the level of your muscle activity.

EMGs are used to check for peripheral nerve damage, pinched nerves, disc herniation, as well as determining a cause for muscle weakness.

What is the Purpose of the Test?

An EMG may be necessary if you demonstrate signs or symptoms of a nerve or muscular disorder. Symptoms may include numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, muscle pain or cramping, or certain types of limb pain. They help us to rule out muscle disorders such as muscular dystrophy or polymyositis, myasthenia gravis, carpal tunnel syndrome or peripheral neuropathy, or even disc herniation in the spine.

What to Expect?

Before your test, we will ask you to arrive with clean and dry skin. You should not use any topical cream or lotion on your skin as it may interfere with the results. You may be asked to hold any OTC and/or prescribed medications. It is important to advise the provider if you have a pacemaker or any implanted devices, if you are taking blood thinners, or have a blood clotting disorder. We will prepare your skin with alcohol wipes.

The test has two parts – EMG and Nerve Conduction Study. Under the Nerve conduction study, electrodes are placed on your skin, after which electrical impulse is introduced in the body. Electromyography involves the use of a small thin needle inserted under the surface of your skin.

After the Procedure

It is common to experience a little discomfort; however, it doesn’t last long. We may ask you to put ice on the site of the test. Bruising is possible but typically fades within a few days. The results of the test are prepared and sent to the ordering provider.
