Can Red Light Therapy Lower Blood Sugar Level?

Red light therapy (RLT), also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation, is a treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular function. This non-invasive therapy has been explored for a variety of health benefits, including wound healing, pain reduction, and skin rejuvenation. Recently, interest has grown in understanding whether RLT can influence metabolic processes, including blood sugar levels.
Red light therapy works by emitting wavelengths of light that are absorbed by the mitochondria, the energy-producing components of cells. This absorption increases the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which enhances cellular energy and function. The improved cellular activity can help repair tissue, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.
Red light therapy and blood sugar level As per a new study by UCL researchers, red light therapy led to a 27.7% reduction in blood glucose levels following glucose intake, and it reduced maximum glucose spiking by 7.5%. “While the study was conducted in healthy individuals, the non-invasive, non-pharmacological technique has the potential to have an impact on diabetes control after meals, as it can reduce damaging fluctuations of blood glucose in the body that contribute to aging,” the researchers have said. The research has been published in the Journal of Biophotonics.
Dr Powner, who was the lead author of the study, said: “It is clear that light affects the way mitochondria function and this impacts our bodies at a cellular and physiological level. “While this has only been done in healthy individuals in this paper, it has the potential to impact diabetes control going forward, as it could help to reduce potentially damaging glucose spikes in the body after meals.”
Some studies suggest that RLT may enhance insulin sensitivity, a critical factor in managing blood sugar levels. By improving the way cells respond to insulin, RLT could help the body use glucose more effectively, thus lowering blood sugar levels.
Chronic inflammation is a known contributor to insulin resistance. RLT’s anti-inflammatory effects might help mitigate this resistance, allowing for better glucose uptake by cells and subsequently lower blood sugar levels.
By boosting cellular energy and function, RLT may enhance the overall metabolic activity, including glucose metabolism. This could support the body in maintaining stable blood sugar levels.
While these findings are encouraging, it is essential to approach RLT as a complementary treatment rather than a standalone solution for blood sugar management. Individuals interested in RLT should consider the following:
Before starting RLT, it is crucial to discuss it with healthcare providers, especially for those managing diabetes or other metabolic conditions. This ensures that RLT is integrated safely into their overall treatment plan.
Effective RLT requires appropriate equipment and dosages. Seeking treatment from qualified professionals like Dr. Abrahamson and the professionals at Great Lakes Health, Wellness & Aesthetics, can help ensure optimal outcomes and minimize risks.
Managing blood sugar levels effectively involves a comprehensive approach, including diet, exercise, medication, and lifestyle changes. RLT should be viewed as one component of a broader strategy.
